Privacy and security

This site publishes school newsletters for the Escondido Union School District (EUSD). It is built and run by the district itself, not a third-party company, and it is designed to collect as little as possible from the families who read it.

What we collect from readers: almost nothing

• No cookies. Reading a newsletter sets no cookies and requires no account.
• No names, no profiles. Readers are never identified. To count how many people saw a newsletter, the site uses an anonymous technical identifier that cannot be traced back to a person and automatically changes every day.
• Locations are approximate and momentary. When a page is opened, the network address is used once to look up a city-level location (for example, "Escondido, CA") and is then discarded. It is never stored.
• No advertising or tracking networks. There are no ad scripts, social media pixels, or third-party analytics on newsletter pages.

Translation

Newsletters offer a Spanish version reviewed by school staff. For other languages, the "Translate to another language" control uses the Google Translate service; it loads only if you choose to use it, and the page text is processed by Google at that moment to produce the translation.

Accessibility

Every newsletter must pass an automated accessibility check (WCAG 2.1 AA) before it can be published, including image descriptions for screen readers, readable color contrast, and clear link text.

How the site is protected

• Only district staff can create or edit newsletters, and they sign in with their district Google accounts. Access is limited per school and checked live against district systems, so it ends when someone leaves.
• All pages are served over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
• Every page carries a strict Content-Security-Policy, a browser-level rule that blocks injected scripts.
• The service runs on district-managed servers, with the database backed up nightly. Backups are treated as confidential student-adjacent records under FERPA practices.
• Automated checks watch our software dependencies for newly published security vulnerabilities.
