Principal's Message
Hello Miller Community,
It was so lovely to see so many families and teachers last Friday at our Family Picnic, sponsored by our PTA. It takes lots of planning, marketing, and fundraising to make these events special! A huge thank you goes out to our PTA board and their planning committees for making this event happen. If you haven't already, please join our PTA to support our efforts to make fun, free events happen all year long! Be on the lookout for future communications about upcoming events in our PTA section on this Family Communication.
Next week on Friday, teachers will be sending out sign-up links for Parent-Teacher Conference times. Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for October 8th and 9th. These are non-student days (no school). Appointment times will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please see the Rooms app for the link and sign-up options, which will be shared on Friday, 9/18. Translators are available. If you need a translator for the meeting, a second link will be provided and shared on Rooms.
As we continue to navigate this wildly hot weather, I want to take a moment to thank our students, staff, and families for their flexibility with the inclement weather schedule. It is challenging to keep outdoor play limited when the sun is out, but with dangerous heat conditions, we want to ensure our students and staff remain safe and healthy! Collectively, Miller Mustangs persevered through this scorching heat, and for that I'm thankful... crossing my fingers for some cooling trends in the near future!

Social Emotional Learning
How to support your child in developing a growth mindset:
Having a growth mindset is about more than simply believing we can improve. It also means children view mistakes as opportunities and find inspiration in the success of others. Children with growth mindsets recognize mistakes and obstacles as opportunities to learn and develop. They connect positive outcomes with their practice and hard work. When we focus on encouraging the process and efforts, and not the end result, we encourage a growth mindset.

Mustangs read "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds, where a little girl is frustrated when she cannot draw and her teacher gently guides her to “Just make a mark and see where it takes you.” The book has so many “big ideas” and is a wonderful way to introduce students to the idea of digging deeper into a book and beginning discussions on growth mindset. Encourage your student to read similar books on growth mindset and talk about ways to develop it further as a family!
Attendance Communications & Celebrations
This week, our average daily attendance was 92.89%. While we've had some absences this week, we are still striving to have a school average of 94.50%! As much as possible, please plan vacations around our scheduled days off school, which have been shared with our calendar magnets with all families. Here are some district guidelines about absences:
When To Keep Your Child Home From School
Your child should stay home from school if they have any new illness or symptom that prevents them from participating meaningfully in school activities or if they have any of the conditions listed below.
Fever
A temperature of 100.4°F or higher. Your child may return to school when their temperature has been normal for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication.
Vomiting
Vomited two or more times in the preceding 24 hours. They may return when vomiting has ended overnight and they can hold down liquids and food.
Diarrhea
Frequent, loose stools that are likely to leak from a diaper or if a child is unlikely to make it to the toilet in time. A child should stay home until they have not had diarrhea for 24 hours.
Rash of Unknown Origin
A rash, especially if accompanied by a fever. A child with a rash should stay home if the rash is worsening, painful, has blisters, or is not healing. A doctor's note is required to confirm the rash is not contagious.
Contagious Illness
If your child has been diagnosed with a contagious illness (e.g., strep throat, chickenpox, pertussis, or a specific infection), they must stay home as directed by their healthcare provider or the local health department. For bacterial infections, a child may return after being on antibiotics for 24 hours and as long as they are fever-free and symptoms are improving.
General Anesthesia
A child who has undergone general anesthesia should stay at home for at least 24 hours after the procedure to recover.

We had an amazing turnout for our Family Picnic; we were so excited to see so many families and teachers join us to celebrate the new school year. Our events are powered by our PTA, and every membership helps to make these events happen.
We currently have 140 PTA members and are 56% of the way to our goal of 250 members by the end of the year.
